Boston City Singers Dorchester Winter Stars Concert

Dorchester, December 16, 2012 – Three of Boston City Singers’ Dorchester music groups will lead a lively holiday concert at the Holy Family Parish in Dorchester on December 16th at 3:00 pm. The concert will feature performances by all three divisions of the advanced Tour Choir for ages 11-18, the Music on Wednesday program for children ages 4-11, and the World Rhythm Ensemble.

From young children to experienced teens, the singers will celebrate the winter holidays with a range of musical styles, including seasonal spirituals, popular carols, and other holiday tunes such as the theme songs from “The Snowman” and “Home Alone.” The younger children will give the world premiere performance of “My sister thinks she’s Santa Claus,” which was written during a “meet the composer” visit in March by the New Zealand composer David Hamilton.  The singers will all come together at the end of the event to perform a few Jamaican carols with the World Rhythm Ensemble and will conclude by leading a community carol sing.

The World Rhythm Ensemble is a new Boston City Singers program in Dorchester this year. The singers in the ensemble are developing a better understanding of rhythm by learning about percussion traditions from all over the world. Kimani Lumsden, the program instructor, believes “that folk traditions that are still practiced without commercial interests are the amber that preserves the shared cultural roots of all humanity.” Join us in Dorchester to celebrate diverse holiday traditions through song!

Boston City Singers provides quality choral training for over 400 young people ages 4-18 in 11 programs in the Boston and Cambridge area, with locations including Mattapan/Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, North Cambridge, and the South Shore.  Our mission is to provide the highest level of musical training and performance opportunities to young people, inspire personal development, celebrate diversity, and foster goodwill through the power of music.
